Course Title: Topics in Social Psychology: 'Social Determinants of Health'
Start Date: 09/09/2026 End Date: 12/22/2026
Term: Fall Semester 2026
Description: The World Health Organization defines Social Determinants of Health (SDoH) as "the conditions in which people are born, grow, live, work and age, and people's access to power, money and resources." SDoH have a major impact on the health of individuals and communities, and are the source of significant health inequities. In this course, students will gain a foundational understanding of SDoH through analyzing how social factors such as racism, economic inequality, and politics, among others, manufacture and maintain health disparities, and learn how a SDoH framework can help us reduce health inequities and advocate for health as a human right. Students will interact with local and national organizations dedicated to supporting community health and develop interdisciplinary skills aligned with careers in public health.
