Course Title: Advanced Topics in Biological Sciences with Laboratory: 'Stream Ecology: Keeping Up with Running Water'
Start Date: 09/09/2026 End Date: 12/22/2026
Term: Fall Semester 2026
Description: This course will focus on the processes and functions of streams and rivers and the basics of aquatic life in flowing water. Lectures will be centered on primary scientific literature and topics relating local hydrology, biogeochemistry, and species and community interactions, within a context of human impacts and climate change. Lab sections will be field- and laboratory-based, including methodologies for sample collection in campus streams, species identification and observation, and water quality assessment. The course will also engage regional stakeholders, natural resource managers, and academic experts to connect foundational ecological principles with applied watershed conservation and management. Final group research projects will apply course knowledge and skills, with student presentations focused on reporting results from their experimental, research, or stakeholder engagement based findings.
