Course Title: Advanced Seminar: 'Gendering Genre: Subverting Cinematic Tropes'
Start Date: 01/27/2026 End Date: 05/12/2026
Term: Spring Semester 2026
Description: This course approaches genres in two dimensions. First, we will examine the conventions and tropes of classical Hollywood genres such as melodrama, horror, western, and noir through the lens of feminist film theory, analyzing how women undermined or adapted these film conventions. Second, we will turn to contemporary retelling of these genres by women filmmakers, exploring how feminist interventions continue to denaturalize and transform genre expectations. The course will also include a creative component: students will produce a videographic assignment that engage directly with genre conventions through hands-on video-editing.
