Course Title: Topics in Environmental Studies: 'Environmental Humanities'
Start Date: 01/27/2026 End Date: 05/12/2026
Term: Spring Semester 2026
Description: At the heart of the humanities lies a central question: What does it mean to be human? This course asks that question in the context of the Anthropocene, when humans are seen as key agents of planetary change inextricably entangled in the more-than-human world. It introduces students to the interdisciplinary field of environmental humanities, examining how history, philosophy, and the arts shape our understandings of the environment. Engaging with storytelling, cultural values, and socio-political structures, we will explore how humanistic inquiry illuminates pressing issues such as climate change and species extinction while fostering creative and just responses to environmental challenges.
