Start Date: 01/27/2026 End Date: 05/12/2026
Term: Spring Semester 2026
Description: This course explores some of the central themes in girlhood studies through critical race and political economy lenses. We will dig into questions such as: What does it mean to be socially considered a girl? Who defines girlhood? How is girlhood defined, shaped, and experienced in different societies, cultures, and periods? How do historical hierarchies of race, class, gender, and sexuality affect the girlhood experience? As we enter the heart of this interdisciplinary academic field that seeks to understand the complexities of existing as a girl, we will revisit the origins and evolution of the field as a distinctive area of study.
