Course Title: Issues in Art History: 'Modern Architecture: From Canon to Anticanon'
Start Date: 01/27/2026 End Date: 05/12/2026
Term: Spring Semester 2026
Description: This course surveys major developments in the history of modern architecture from 1850 to the present. We will look at how new materials and emerging technologies changed the underlying possibilities of architectural form, with deliberate focus on how political changes at a global scale -- from world war conflagrations to anticolonial independence movements -- shifted the social stakes of modern architecture. We will cover canonical projects of modern architecture and contextualize them within their larger sociopolitical landscape, leaving room to examine many fascinating buildings that lay outside dominant narratives of modernization.
