Course Title: Advanced Topics in Politics: 'Feminisms in Latin America'
Start Date: 09/03/2025 End Date: 12/16/2025
Term: Fall Semester 2025
Description: In the last decade, Latin America has experienced a feminist revolution. Feminist movements have taken over the streets, demanding policies to address a range of topics such as gender-based violence, access to abortion and the protection of natural resources. As a result, governments have responded with policy reforms that have created programs and agencies to address these issues and expand access to women and LGBTQ rights. Many of these policy reforms and legislative initiatives place the region at the vanguard of the protection of women and gender diverse groups. This course provides a discussion of Latin American feminist movements, their history and evolution, as well as the impact they had in policy reform. Through the analysis of diverse materials such as primary and secondary sources, documentaries, podcasts and invited speakers, we will explore the power of Latin American feminists, and the possible contributions the region can make to the advancement of rights for women and gender-diverse populations throughout the world.
