Course Title: Topics in Creative Writing: 'Queer and Trans Writing'
Start Date: 01/23/2024 End Date: 05/07/2024
Term: Spring Semester 2024
Description: What do we mean when we say "queer writing" or "trans writing"? Are we talking about creative writing by queer and/or trans authors? Writing about queer or trans practices, identities, experience? Writing that subverts conventional forms? All of the above? In this course, we will engage these questions not theoretically but through praxis. We will read fiction, poetry, comics, creative nonfiction, and hybrid forms. Expect to encounter work that challenges you in terms of form and content. Some writers we may read include Ryka Aoki, James Baldwin, Tom Cho, Samuel R. Delany, kari edwards, Elisha Lim, Audre Lorde, Cherríe Moraga, Eileen Myles, and David Wojnarowicz.

This is the complete book list for this class.
Instructor's comments about the book list: Note: Killingly is coming out in paperback in May, Kate Beutner is coming to MHC in April, and I am working with the Odyssey & the publisher to see if we might get copies earlier. Where to get books in a pandemic, or any time? Resource here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1xeElF_tr7tBZy4w2qeTV9mvv5R-VV9bmuS WahohY7bA/edit?usp=sharing I encourage you to purchase these (and all) required course texts from your nearest locally-owned independent bookstore) when possible. Bookshop.org is a good online option that supports independent bookstores. Writers need to be aware of the economic ramifications of ordering books from Amazon. But of course we writers also have our own economic contingencies. The library should have copies of all course texts on reserve. Additionally, some e-books may be available from CW Mars, the Boston Public Library system, or your home public library system. If you need additional help, contact me privately about alternate arrangements--I may have a spare copy.
