Course Title: Freedom Dreams and Historical Memory
Start Date: 09/06/2023 End Date: 12/19/2023
Term: Fall Semester 2023
Description: How do the stories we tell about the past shape our connection to one another and our ability to imagine emancipatory futures? This course will consider how people in -- and in relation to -- the United States have envisioned more just and inclusive communities, launched democratic initiatives, and reached for solidarity in the context of ongoing histories of harm. We will explore ways to mobilize such vision and initiative even as we work to reveal the histories of injustice obscured by nationalist narratives. What can we learn about the possibilities for achieving and sustaining democracy by reflecting on African American, Indigenous, immigrant, and working-class histories and cultures?

This is the complete book list for this class.
Copies are on order at A few copies of TRACE may be available at the Odyssey Bookshop.
Instructor's comments about the book list: IMPORTANT: 1. These two books are listed here as "required" because they are required reading in our class. But please note that there will be at least a few hard copies of each title available to share among you, so if it is a hardship or a stretch for you to make these purchases, please know that there will be an alternative to purchasing your own copies. 2. That said, sharing books will likely go more smoothly if some of you are able to purchase one or both titles, so if that is workable for you, thank you for doing so. 3. If you plan to purchase Nick Estes' Our History is the Future, please read the following carefully: --You will need to pay special attention to the year of publication or to the ISBN to be sure you are purchasing a copy that can arrive in time. The 2019 edition is the one you want. --The ISBN listed above is for the ebook, published in 2019, which appears to be readily available and reasonably priced ($6.99). --The ISBN for the hardcover edition, published in 2019, is 978-1-76663-672-0. Go ahead and purchase that one if you wish. --Be careful not to "preorder" this title, as that option appears to be for a new printing that will not be available until after our course has ended. --Hard copies of the 2019 book may be difficult to find, but as noted above, we have some copies to share, and I may even be able to help you find one to purchase. 4. Feel free to purchase any copy you find of Lauret Savoy's Trace, or share a hard copy with others in the class. 5. I think you will be pleased to read these two award-winning books! 6. Other readings will be available electronically, at no charge. ***No other books will be listed here as "required."***
