| Description: An introduction to the history and legends of Alexander the Great and Cleopatra VII through an analysis of the surviving historical and literary evidence. By spreading Greek culture from northern Greece as far as modern Pakistan, Alexander transformed much of the known world, which witnessed changes in politics and imperialism, literature and science, as well as in the lives of women. | This is the complete book list for this class.   |
| Instructor's comments about the book list: As you can see, the only required textbook is Austin's sourcebook (The Hellenistic World from Alexander to the Roman Conquest). Since some students like to have a more conventional textbook, I am recommending one of the two options (EITHER Shipley's OR Errington's), but again, these are NOT required for the course. I expect to provide the necessary historical background through lectures and materials downloadable from moodle.   |
