Course Title: Jack the Ripper and the Making of Late-Victorian London
Start Date: 09/06/2023 End Date: 12/19/2023
Term: Fall Semester 2023
Description: In the summer and fall of 1888, a series of gruesome murders captured the attention of Londoners and brought questions of class, gender, race and social-economic change to the forefront of public debate. Though the culprit was never identified, Jack the Ripper became synonymous with the perceived dangers of late-Victorian London. Using newspapers, periodicals, police archives, and other sources from the period, this course will set students on an historical investigation of the "Whitechapel Murders," seeking to understand the event, its historical context, and the way historians have interpreted its meaning.

Instructor's comments about the book list: Hello everyone! I've just completed the book list for this course, but I wanted to make a note that you don't necessarily need to buy specific editions of either book. I'll be referencing the 5th edition of Graff and Birkenstein, but earlier editions have almost identical text for the parts that we'll be reading, so you could definitely get by with a 3rd or 4th edition (I also have a 3rd edition copy, which I can cross-check if need be). I don't believe there are any new editions of Rubenhold, but I know there are multiple printings (and a free copy on Kindle Unlimited). I'll be working from a 1st edition hardback, so the page numbering may be off from later editions, but that is all fine too. And neither book will be required in the first two weeks, so you should still have plenty of time to order these for the class.
