Course Title: Advanced Topics in Religion: 'Liberation Theology and Sexuality'
Start Date: 01/23/2023 End Date: 05/08/2023
Term: Spring Semester 2023
Description: When it emerged, Latin American liberation theology sought to address the plight of the poor by analyzing socio-economic and political factors through a religious or theological lens. But some critics argue that the principal theorists of liberation theology neglected considerations of sexuality and gender, leading to an unrealistic and incomplete engagement with intersectional forces of oppression and resistance. This seminar course evaluates the several iterations of liberation theologies in the Americas, with particular focus on the works of queer theologians, activists, writers, and artists at the intersection of poverty, race, gender, and sexuality.
