| Description: In this course, we will take a leap back in time to the origins of life, discuss the evolution of major organismal lineages, and investigate biology processes at different scales, from cellular to ecological. Through the lectures, labs, and in-class discussions, students will be able to explain how scientific knowledge is generated. In lab, students will explore biological diversity, cellular dynamics, and evolutionary and ecological processes, with a focus on gaining skills in scientific inquiry, including hypothesis development, experimental design, collecting and analyzing results, and scientific writing. |

| Instructor's comments about the book list: All required readings will be made available to you on Moodle. However, I recommend this textbook for background information and examples if you feel more comfortable having a text to follow. There are two copies of the 3rd edition of this textbook on reserve at Mount Holyoke College's Williston Library. They can be checked out and read in the library for 4-hour time periods. Due to the cost of the textbook, I would recommend making use of the available library copies. If you wish to purchase or rent your own copy, any edition of this book would be fine.
