Description: This course examines how implicit and explicit efforts to manage a language influence speakers' beliefs about a language and language in general and determine access to different forms of power by establishing the hegemony of specific linguistic groups or communities in multilingual settings where Spanish is spoken. We will explore issues such as linguistic imperialism/colonization, linguistic discrimination, links between linguistic and national identities, linguistic human rights movements and the concept of language ecology as providing frameworks for social change through inclusion and political participation. |
