Course Title: Data Science and Society: Who, What, Where, Why, and How?

Description: Advances in computing allow entities in business and government to gather and analyze data in increasingly large quantities. We will try to understand what data science is, why it matters, and what knowledge is needed by consumers and practitioners of data science. We will look at case studies drawn from science, industry, and government and use these to discuss the societal impacts and ethical issues that should be on the minds of data scientists.

Instructor's comments about the book list: We'll be reading about a chapter of each of the texts. Braiding SweetGrass and Doing Data Science are available online through the MHC library, so you do not need to buy them if you are comfortable with e-versions of the books. All of the texts will be on reserve at the library so you can also just photocopy the chapter that we are using for class.
