Course Title: Abstract Algebra: 'Rings'
Start Date: 09/07/2022 End Date: 12/20/2022
Term: Fall Semester 2022
Description: Abstract algebra is the study of the common principles that govern computations with seemingly disparate objects. One way to begin is by studying rings, which are sets with two operations, typically addition and multiplication. Examples include the integers, the integers modulo n, and polynomials in n variables. Our goal is to study a definition of rings that unifies all of the important examples above and more.

Instructor's comments about the book list: We are using the book by Thomas W. Hungerford called Abstract Algebra, An Introduction (edition 2, is the best). I like Edition 2 (or even edition 1) better than edition 3 so get edition 2 (or 1) if you can. Otherwise, if you have to get edition 3 - because you find a much cheaper copy - we will make it work. Here is a link to a picture of edition 2: https://www.amazon.com/Thomas-W-Hungerford-Abstract-Introduction/ dp/B00854BDP4/ref=sr_1_4?crid=31Y1QQ0M6BVKD&keywords= Abstract+Algebra+Hungerford&qid=1656511260&s=books &sprefix=abstract+algebra+hungerford%2Cstripbooks%2C915&sr=1-4 Do not pay $89 for the book we should be able to find a cheaper version. I see 14 copies available to $8.49 and there are MHC students who used the textbook last fall and may be willing to sell it to you for the fall. Email me (robinson) if you are having trouble finding a cheaper copy.
