Course Title: Jack the Ripper and the Making of Late-Victorian London
Start Date: 09/07/2022 End Date: 12/20/2022
Term: Fall Semester 2022
Description: In the summer and fall of 1888, a series of gruesome murders captured the attention of Londoners and brought questions of class, gender, race and social-economic change to the forefront of public debate. Though the culprit was never identified, Jack the Ripper became synonymous with the perceived dangers of late-Victorian London. Using newspapers, periodicals, police archives, and other sources from the period, this course will set students on an historical investigation of the "Whitechapel Murders," seeking to understand the event, its historical context, and the way historians have interpreted its meaning.

Instructor's comments about the book list: Hi everyone, I'm looking forward to meeting all of you in a couple of weeks time. My apologies for getting this book list out late to you. I wanted to say a quick word about editions. There are multiple editions for both of the required books in this course, and pretty much any edition will do. I know that Rubenhold has now come out in a soft cover, which is what many students get. They Say/I Say has MANY editions--more than I can keep track of. I'll be asking you to do assignments from this book, but with a great amount of flexibility, so you don't need to worry about having a specific edition. The latest editions can get expensive, so a used edition would be fine. We won't need either book for the first week of class, and you won't need They Say/I Say until, I think, week 3 or 4, so you still have plenty of time to pick up copies. Please let me know if you have any questions!
