Course Title: Five College Advanced Studio Seminar: 'Archives and Collections'

Description: This course examines the role of archives and collections as sources of inspiration and materials with which to create. Through assigned media, artist/exhibition case studies, visiting artist talks, and creative workshops leading up to a final project and exhibition, students will gain a working definition of the archive and interdisciplinary strategies for exploring this theme in their work. The goals of this course are to: explore ways to engage with the archive, including appropriation, interpretation, reconfiguration and interrogation; unpack strategies for making meaning through the accumulation of images/objects; and utilize the language of display to imbue work with layers of meaning.
