Additional Book Comments
Instructor's comments about the book list: Two texts will be required reading but not required for purchase. A third text is recommended especially for those preparing for teacher licensure. All texts will be listed here as "recommended" in order to emphasize that you are not required to purchase any books for this course. We will all read a substantial part of Malinda Maynor Lowery, *The Lumbee Indians: An American Struggle*, which is available for use free of charge on JSTOR, accessible through Mount Holyoke's library. The paperback ISBN is listed above for those who wish to purchase a hard copy. Many readings will also be provided on Moodle. We will use an Openstax textbook, *U.S. History,* an online textbook available through Creative Commons. The book is fully accessible online, free of charge. Print copies of the book may be ordered for about $40, but there is no need to make such a purchase in advance of our first meeting. For those preparing for teacher licensure, and for those who would like a more in-depth narrative and wide-ranging reference, another text is recommended: John Mack Faragher, et al., *Out of Many: A History of the American People,* published by Pearson. The 9th edition (2020) is the latest (available for rent for $40), but earlier editions are available at considerably lower prices. One or two older editions may also be available to borrow from me; please let me know if you would like to borrow a copy. If you wish to purchase one of these and you are deciding which you prefer to have in hard copy, please wait until we meet to decide which to purchase.
