| Term: Spring Semester 2021 |
| Description: This course offers an in-depth examination of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and, more broadly, civil society in Africa as critical players in the governance and economic development process in the continent. Based on an examination of the major theories and concepts of NGOs and civil society, the course will uncover the roots, development, and meaning of civil society in African nations. A central focus of the course will be on the relationship of NGOs with the state, international donors, political parties and other players in the democratization process, especially the provision of social services. Finally, the course examines the fundamental challenges confronting NGOs and civil society groups in their quest to influence socio-economic and political development in the continent. |
