| Description: This course facilitates a critical dialogue between the creative contributions of African American artists and mainstream developments in American Art. Specifically, the course explores the central themes and debates in the visual and cultural history of art made by African Americans (1750-present).Through the close study of art objects, engagement with primary sources, group discussions, and independent research, students will gain an understanding of African American art as both a distinct cultural expression and an integral part of the story of American art. In their study of art made by African Americans, students will develop advanced and transferable visual and cultural literacy skills. |
