Course Title: Jack the Ripper and the Making of Late-Victorian London
Start Date: 08/24/2020 End Date: 10/15/2020
Term: Fall Semester 2020
Description: In the summer and fall of 1888, a series of gruesome murders captured the attention of Londoners and brought questions of class, gender, race and social-economic change to the forefront of public debate. Though the culprit was never identified, Jack the Ripper became synonymous with the perceived dangers of late-Victorian London. Using newspapers, periodicals, police archives, and other sources from the period, this course will set students on an historical investigation of the "Whitechapel Murders," seeking to understand the event, its historical context, and the way historians have interpreted its meaning.

Instructor's comments about the book list: I everyone! I realize that I did not include an ISBN for the Graff reading, which has multiple editions. The one that I will be referencing is ISBN 0393631672 (4th edition), but I believe that all of the current editions have very similar, if not identical, exercises in them, so you can definitely work with earlier editions if need be. Also, I've been informed by the library (LITS) that the College does not have access to the e-book version of Rubenhold, but that you can get access to the e-book via a Boston Public library subscription (which any MHC student can get). I'm going to press harder to get an ebook direct from the College, but we can definitely sort out access in the first week of class, in case you were not planning on ordering the hardcover. (I do always recommend getting a print version of the book, but realize that this may not be practical in all circumstances).
