Course Title: Women and Gender in the Study of Culture: 'Queer and Trans Writing'
Start Date: 01/21/2020 End Date: 05/05/2020
Term: Spring Semester 2020
Description: What do we mean when we say "queer writing" or "trans writing"? Are we talking about writing by queer and/or trans authors? Writing about queer or trans practices, identities, experience? Writing that subverts conventional forms? All of the above? In this course, we will engage these questions not theoretically but through praxis. We will read fiction, poetry, comics, creative nonfiction, and hybrid forms. Expect to encounter work that challenges you in terms of form and content. Some writers we may read include Ryka Aoki, James Baldwin, Tom Cho, Samuel R. Delany, kari edwards, Elisha Lim, Audre Lorde, Cherríe Moraga, Eileen Myles, and David Wojnarowicz.

Additional Book Comments
This is NOT the complete book list for this class.
Copies are on order at Odyssey Books in South Hadley
Instructor's comments about the book list: I encourage you to purchase required course texts from the Odyssey, a locally-owned independent bookstore, if you are able. Writers need to be aware of the economic ramifications of ordering books from Amazon. See this article for more information and resources: http://www.newrepublic.com/article/119769/amazons-monopoly-must-be-bro ken-radical-plan-tech-giant. Whenever possible, try to support living QT/POC writers by buying their books from local independent bookstores or directly from the publishers! But of course we writers also have our own economic contingencies. All required texts for the course are on 3 hour reserve at the library. If you need additional help, contact me privately about alternate arrangements--I sometimes have a spare copy. Please note: I will add one or two more titles once I have more information about visitors.
