Course Title: Gods and Mortals: Ancient Greek and Roman Myth
Start Date: 01/21/2020 End Date: 05/05/2020
Term: Spring Semester 2020
Description: We will accompany Odysseus on his return from Troy, retrieve the Golden Fleece with Jason, and race with Ovid through his witty -- and often troubling -- retelling of Greek myths from a Roman perspective. This course examines how Greek and Roman authors and artists from very different periods used myth to explore questions about life, art and politics. Works may include: Homer, Odyssey; Apollonius of Rhodes, Argonautica; Ovid, Metamorphoses and Heroides; Greek tragedy, and ancient images representing myths.

This is the complete book list for this class.
Copies are on order at The Odyssey Bookshop, South Hadley
Instructor's comments about the book list: We will begin with the *Odyssey* and end with *Metamorphoses*, both of which are long poems (in case you want to get a head start over January). There will be additional material posted on Moodle, and there could be an addition to this book list. Note: You do not need to use these translations, as long as you can identify book and approximate line numbers of the epics (Odyssey, Hesiods' Theogony, Ovids' Metamorphoses (or just line numbers in the dramas). There is, for example, a new and vigorous translation of the *Odyssey* by Emily Wilson (the first woman to translate the work): ISBN-10: 0393356256 or ISBN-13: 978-0393356250; however, there are likely to be more used copies of the Fagles' translation.
